Summer Learning Journey Waka Ama

Waka Ama is a boat race with traditional Maori waka instead of boats. I would like to be in a Waka Ama race one day because I think it would be a great experience and lots of fun. Although it would be fun I think it might be very hard work. Would you like to be in a Waka Ama race? Watch this Video and then comment down below.

Letter to friend from point of view of Maori settlers. Summer learning journey

Hi Ari, we have just reached our first rest point and I'm scared. There are lots of dark caves and shadowy trees that look like someone is going to jump out from behind them. Everyone says the island isn't populated but I'm not so sure. I'm also nervous that there's going to be no trees in NZ, I mean I don't even know anything about NZ. Thanks for reading this I will write more letters soon.

From Jack

Maui and the giant fish, summer learning challenge

I learnt
1. That Maui was not as old as his brothers.
2. Maui's brothers were greedy and mean
3. Maui's karakia was powerful magic

Another story I have heard about Maui is Maui and the sun. Here is the link to Maui and the giant fish, comment back telling me what you learnt.

Tomorrow I will be reseting everything so I am going to show you some screenshots of it.  Here is the link so you can do it for yourself. LINK

NZ Nuclear Free stance

NZ Nuclear Free stance

In January 1985 the American ship USS Buchanan came to NZ the American government refused to tell whether or not there were nuclear weapons on board. The David Lange’s Labour government did not let it land. I think they should have let it land either way as if it had nuclear weapons on board they could have showed us how to make them and helped us prepare for a nuclear war which we could survive in, and if they did not have nuclear weapons on board we could stay as a nuclear-free country, (obviously they will not show us now with their idiot president.)

The reason David Lange did not want possible nuclear weapons landing is because just before the NZ ship The Rainbow Warrior had been blown by France in an argument about nuclear weapons. The reason it was The Rainbow Warrior that was blown up was because that was our protest ship that would be sailed around Atolls to stop the French testing their nuclear bombs on them. This is another unnecessary argument where we could have learned how to manufacture nuclear bombs. For more information on The Rainbow Warrior check out my earlier post.

Thank you for reading my opinion on the NZ Nuclear Free stance written from a different perspective I do not actually believe this.

Proposed Haast-Hollyford road

Proposed Haast-Hollyford road

I do not agree with this because it will spoil the wilderness and animals and plants will die from all the equipment used to make the road. All though this will make it easier to go to Milford Sound it will also mean more people going there and making it more difficult to get a place to stay and more traffic. This will cost a lot more then expected as they will need to make more hotels restaurants and shops for tourists and if you think about there’s not really enough room without cutting down the native trees and the reason people go there is to see the native bush.

People will also shoot animals from their trucks and because they’re moving so fast they may only injure it not kill it leaving it stumbling around in excruciating pain until it dies a slow, painful death. This road will turn NZ’s natural beauty into a dump from rubbish people throw away. The remote parts of the South Island will become just a normal place. Fiordland National Park will become a place just like Greymouth.

Thank you for reading my opinion on the proposed Haast-Hollyford road.

Smart Goals

A smart goal is a goal that is:

Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Relevant
Time-bound

1. I want to be able to be an accurate three-point shooter in basketball by the start of next season.

2. I want to read 20 books by the end of week 3

3. Make the West Coast touch team by the end of next season by working hard.

The sinking of the Rainbow Warrior

The sinking of the Rainbow Warrior from a French perspective.

We should not be a nuclear-free NZ if there is a war we need to be able to defend ourselves.
We can also sell the nuclear bombs and make money. I agree with the French who tested these bombs. They were testing them on atolls away from civilisation. How are they supposed to prepare with annoying ships sailing round the atolls. The island belonged to the French!

Ok so they blew up a boat in Auckland harbour and killed someone. Maybe they shouldn’t have done that but what’s the big deal! They paid NZ $13 million and NZ still sentenced the two people who blew up the boat ten years in jail.

After spending a year in jail they were sent to Tahiti to spend the rest of their imprisonment there. However after only a couple of years both had been smuggled back to France. Of course NZers were furious but there was nothing they could do the agents were on French ground and the NZ government could do nothing without declaring a full-blown war and giving all the time the French had spent on nuclear bombs the French would win it, which is why we should not be a nuclear-free zone. If we had nuclear power we could have gone to war with the French and won. After this NZ became completely nuclear-free.

Thank you for reading my opinion on the sinking of the Rainbow Warrior. I wrote this from a French perspective and do not actually believe this.

1981 Springboks tour.

1981 Springboks tour.
I’m a protester I don’t want the game to be played because;
In 1921 Springboks beat a NZ Māori A South African reporter was disgusted seeing white NZers cheering on Maori.
SA didn’t want to play black people when half their population is black!
This isn’t fair anyone should be allowed to play rugby. In protests hundreds were injured.
This game should not be played if the black people can’t play.
Black people are some of the best players. When ABs went to SA they lost without Maori. With Maori they won. Imagine the ABs today without black people!
If they played the American basketball team today imagine who couldn’t play! LeBron James! Kevin Durant! Draymond Green (Imagine his reaction)! Black people can be amazing athletes. Running: Usain Bolt Basketball: Michael Jordan Rugby: Aaron Smith I could go on for ages.

Thank you for taking the time to read my opinion on the 1981 Springboks tour.

Speech

Everyone here likes chocolate right?

But is it actually that good for you?

Hi I’m Jack and today I’m talking about chocolate.

See this chocolate bar, I researched the ingredients and I found out that this might only be 10% cocoa, and it was 28% sugar. And sure some chocolates might have nuts or fruits in them to make them “healthy” but the Cadbury picnic bar is still 25% sugar. I even found one that was 33% Sugar. 33%! That’s one third! And yes you can get chocolate that is 50% cocoa or whatever, but they still have a lot of sugar in them! The lowest percentage I could find with Cadbury was Black Forest and that’s still 15% Sugar.

Now I’m not saying you shouldn’t eat chocolate at all, I know there are people including myself who couldn’t go without chocolate.

But we should eat less of it. In 2013 NZ and Australia ate 4.8 kg of chocolate per person. That’s a lot of chocolate. In 2015 Switzerland ate 8.2 kgs of chocolate per person. A substitute for chocolate is carob chocolate. Carob chocolate is a type of chocolate that diabetic people can eat. Naturally this has less sugar and is a lot healthier than normal chocolate

Not only is eating a lot of chocolate not healthy, it’s expensive. First of all you have to buy the chocolate, then your teeth rot and you have to pay for fillings then if you keep eating lots of chocolate and it gets really bad you might need a root canal or crown! That would cost a couple of thousand dollars and if you don’t want pay that much then your only other choice is to have all your teeth ripped out and get dentures. That would cost thousands of dollars for all that. Or you could just eat less chocolate and save thousands.

And instead of buying lots of cheap chocolate bars you should get one or two expensive chocolate bars because they are the ones that are more likely to be with Fairtrade. Fairtrade is a program that supports the people who are actually growing the cocoa beans. The companies that are selling cheap chocolate probably are not treating their workers well. There are many companies that are with Fairtrade, some of them are Cadbury, Hershey’s, Sweet Riot and Theo Chocolate. Another big company is Nestle which has some Fairtrade products but not all. If you want to find out if a type of chocolate is Fairtrade look for this symbol (Points to bar.)

The chances of us stopping chocolate buying altogether though is impossible, as cocoa is the fifth most commonly traded commodity up with oil (1) coffee (2) Agriculture (3) and animals products (4). DeLafēe of Switzerland’s gold chocolate box sold for $330 and it only came with eight tiny chocolates! That’s a lot of money!

But it can’t just be us stopping it has to be everyone, starting (Takes a bite) Now.

Save the Left Bank Art Gallery.

Hi guys, today we had to write to the council to tell them what we want to do with the Left Bank Art Gallery.

Kia ora,

My name is Jack and I am writing to you about the council funding of the strengthening works for the Left Bank Gallery.

I am supporting option 1: to keep it

Because it is a historic building built in 1924 and needs to be restored to it’s former glory.  Many people will protest against the destruction of this landmark. It is not that difficult to fix this building. SAVE THE LEFT BANK ART GALLERY!

Kind regards Jack.

Is it wrong to fight

I personally think fighting is good. Because if you can’t fight you can’t do boxing, wrestling, judo, karate and sports like that. But although I think you should be able to fight I do not think there should be wars or things like that.

If you can not fight you can’t play wrestling. Which is an exciting sport and a lot of people would not have as much fun. Another sport that involves fighting is karate which helps you stronger and fitter. Although many people would be sad about wrestling, there would probably there would probably be even more sad about karate. And then there’s boxing, another popular sport which a lot of people play or support. The loss of these sports along with others would probably spark protests all over the world, And eventually the government (or whoever banned fighting) would probably have to pass a new law saying it is all right to fight in a sport or in self-defence.

Other sports that would be lost are Tae kwon do, Judo, Kickboxing, Rugby, League and American football. That concludes my opinion on fighting I have shared with you, my personal thoughts on fighting, what I think would happen if fighting was banned and what sports you would no longer be able to play if fighting was banned. Thank you for taking the time to read my opinion on fighting.
